Geez. Soldering bits here and there inside one's $500 phone? I don't think so. I pass.
I'm guessing that by "unlocked" he means it will accept any SIM card one throws in it whose carrier is on the same frequencies as ATT, right?
That's one smart 17 year old. The older I become, the more uneducated I feel. I'm a lot more wise about people and relationships, but a lot more ignorant about technology, despite my best efforts to keep up.

well unlocked has two meanings with this particular phone. If you want to use just the Ipod and wifi internet without the ability to make calls you need to have the phone 'unlocked' at the Apple store by AT&T (presumably with phone service activation). You can cancel the AT&T service and keep using the MP3 and Wifi.
This what the Ebay sellers refer to when they say 'unlocked'.
But since the 17 year old hacker figured out how to unlock the phone to work with Tmobil yesterday, there are now Ebay sellers listing 'unlocked' phones for like $800...Although you won't get the visual voicemail that allows you organize your voice messages like emails in your outlook inbox.
I suppose this hack is useful if you just signed a two year contract with another carrier but really want an Iphone bad. I don't think voiding the warranty on a phone that's bound to have problems is worth this hack. But for those overseas Mac addicts that can't wait a year for an Iphone it must be a good step forward.
I'm sure someone is taking this hack to the next level as we speak so that all you have to do is pay a guy $100 for a CD that will do all this unlocking in five minutes. And then of course Apple will change the software so the CD won't work anymore.

Hahahaha!
It amazes me how much attention people give those iPhones. My buddy who has a iPhone always dedicates one pocket to the phone just so it doesn't get scratched.

Well a UBS analyst says Apple sells 3 iphones a day at each store and that the 1 millionth Iphone will by sold by the end of next month.
CHA CHING!
with $800 million on the books at least in only a couple of months one can only imagine how many more they would have sold if they offered the iphone to each of the major carriers instead of doing an exclusive deal requiring this advanced level hack.
100 million ipods sold by Apple is cool but the MP3 market is peanuts compared to the cellphone market.
p.s.
I read that Jobs sold some of his stock just as the stock was taking a sharp but temporary dive (bounced back $20 in a week). Had he waited two weeks he would have raked in another $5 million. He probably doesn't even care. must be nice..
