Save the $25K and use your Cayenne. Use part of the "savings" for car washes and off-road tires. Done!

I bought a Wrangler once to help out a friend who'd gotten himself in a financial bind. I can't even begin tell you how much I hated that thing. I thought I would keep it until my buddy got himself into a position to buy it back, but I just couldn't do it. I couldn't get rid of that POS fast enough. There's a reason that they're not expensive. Slow, loud, uncomfortable and clumsy, plus you need to tow a trailer behind you to pick up all the crap that falls off.

There are so much better options out there if you want a dedicated off road vehicle. Jeeps are multi purpose, honestly. Google some off road builder sites, I bet you can buy a wicked tube frame off road monster for 25 grand.

I'm not sure I remember the year...'97, '99, something like that. I do remember it sucked.

If nothing else they look cool. If you really are planning on it being an off road vehicle they make TONS of aftermarket parts for those things to be built up relatively cheap! I have a limited grand cherokee that is a daily driver but still catches some trail time. I can personally say jeeps are VERY capable off road vehicles.

I've had two Wranglers, a '91 and '97. Nine years total with both and the only problem I had was a broken engine mount on the '91 (my fault) and a short in the dash oil pressure gauge on the '97 (also probably my fault, I used to pull the drain plugs and just forget about the top in the summer.) Both very capable off road without a whole lot of mechanical mods, just a lift and some quality offroad (NOT all terrain) tires will go along way for just some muddin fun. If you can swing it, I'd go for the Rubicon, those are pretty much trail ready out of the factory.

As for the color anything but black of course. If you are going to take it off road I do not recommend it, trust me on this one. If I recall correctly, Jeep used to have a color back before the face lift in 1997 that was called in-the-bush-green which was a flat dark green color. Very rugged looking. Don't know it they still offer it tho.

As with most Jeep Wranglers, it's a love it or hate it proposition. I've had numerous Jeeps over the past 30 years and recently drove a new Wrangler. I thought it drove really well for a Jeep. A bit low on power, but very stable and one of the better rides of any of the short wheelbase Jeeps I've been in.

Jeep Wranglers are really a purpose built vehicle. A lot of folks who buy one just because the look cool, usually end up disliking the thing because it doesn't handle like their Camry did and the gas mileage has never been anything to write home about. The new Wranglers have a wider footprint and are more stable than previous years. They also have more suspension travel in stock form.

I have a 1981 CJ7 with an AMC 360 V8, lifted, lockers in both diffs, winch, etc. It's not much fun on the street, but there are very few places it won't go. If you can swing it, buy the Rubicon model. The Rubicon has all the best parts (Dana 44's front and rear with lockers) and will have the best resale value.
