Whether you like the Yanks or not (I am a lifetime fan), you have to love and miss Joe Torre.

What a class act.

Now, who needs a good manager?

The way the Yankees front office handled this was deplorable! Torre IS a class act and a credit to the game. He probably is finished as a manager but will show up on TV I'm sure. BTW - Go Rockies,,,Rocktober!!

The Cubs need Joe Torre, A-Rod AND Mark Cuban. Next year is the 100 year anniversary of our last title :(

Joe Torre may be a nice man, but he has not done what his job dictates. Being offered 5 mil and more to do his job is not showing disrespect. The 4 managers in the league playoffs did not make that combined. Just maybe he was not capable of managing a short season. Many teams are built for a 162 game season and some teams are built for the playoffs. If you are built for the playoffs then notg going anywhere is failure. Getting 5 mil for losing is not even realistic. How many forum members would still have their jobs if they were failures for 4 years in a row? A salary total of app. 2 1/2 times the average dictates more than what the Royals are doing--sitting home and watching.

Actually I said that Joe is a class act.

Whether he is a great manager or not, well that is for history to decide. Joe stated that HE felt insulted by the offer, which is simply a statement as to how he felt.

My guess is that if any of us on this forum had a marketable skill worth 5 mil, we would be PAID that amount of money and be happy to take it.

I notice the guys with the strongest opinions usually talk, not play.

PS- the guy has won 4 world series and made the playoffs 12 yrs in a row.

Any other managers out there can say that?

I think Lou Pinnella is perfect for the Cubs and should stay there. Joe Torre can't hit any better than Lou! The team has to perform on the field! Getting back to JT, the results speak for themselves - the guy's a winner. He lives in the NYC fishbowl and has continually been successful. My dad saw the last WS game played in Wrigley, 1945!. Torre has gotten the Yanks there repeatedly. My dad just wants to see one more WS game in Wrigley Field! The offer extended by the Yankees was less than Joe was already making. They knew he would reject it. They should have had the class and decency to send him off with a thank-you and appreciation for his historic accomplishments. The toughest job in sport is manager of the New York Yankees. BTW I do think Mark Cuban would be great as an owner for the Cubs. But for now I live in Denver. GO ROCKIES!! Rocktober? YES!

I'm no Yankee fan, but....

I agree that he is a classy guy. I think that he deserved better treatment even if he didn't get to the ALCS or Series. Why do they want him for half price with disrespectful incentives?! He is a proud man. Too proud to stoop.

I think a sincere statement thanking him for superior service would have been better. Even if the statement concluded with "... but it is just time for a change and wish Joe the best in whatever he chooses to do next."

With a record high player budget he got into the playoffs 12 years in a row--not champs ever time. With an 80 mil budget Bobby Cox won his division 14 times in a row and makes about 2.1 mil. . And for your information I played in the minors for a few seasons before I realized that I was not going to make the bigs for any extended lenght of time. I played and am also talking. You?

The buck stops here.

Famous words and unfortunately big changes are needed in the Bronx.
Whatever happens they can not afford to lose A-Rod, without him I doubt they would have even gotten the wildcard.
SteinB would be wise to give A-Rod a slice of the TV money, because he'll get the $$$ he's looking from another team. Better to have a third party pay it, something the other teams probably can't swing in the same way.

p.s.
Get Cox and at least one genuine clutch hitter like Bernie used to be.

Torre? A class act? I don't know what passes for "class" nowadays, but if you ask me (a die hard Yankee fan, mind you) Ted freakin' Williams is a class act. Ted Williams wanted to "prove" he could play at age 41 and insisted on taking a pay cut in 1960. Ted Williams insisted that he play the last game(s) even if it meant he may finish his record season under .400. Don't remember that Joe? Don't realize that 5 mil is still a few $$ more than any other manager that don't go 3 'out the last few years? Still worried about that extra 2 mil you feel you deserve? Need another fancy watch for your other arm? How about this -- win the World series and you'll get it, plus a guarentee for $8 mil the next year. Heaven forbid we incorporate the merit system for a manager. Anyone want to venture a guess as to what Joe's managerial record is without the Yankees? It definately ain't a winning one.

haha......I think Joe did a great job of watching the games like the rest of the fans......

put him right up there with Phil Jackson.....a genius, that had Michael, Scottie, Dennis, Tony....and then he took the tough rebuilding project with Shaq and Kobe....

so Joe quit because he didn't like the incentives in his contract based on winning?? he didn't want to earn the money? class act?? maybe....gutless for sure :D

Does this hold for ALL opinions? Global warming, too? Or just baseball? :D
