I remember from the jobs thread that we have a lot of IT professionals here. I have a computer problem that I'm thinking about solving with a hammer.

I have Verizon DSL. Suddenly, my computer has started loading pages at a snail's pace. Literally, it is taking 5 minutes to load some pages; but, only certain pages. The weird thing is that videos, photos and stuff seem to load just fine. It's things like this forum, 6speed and a classic Mustang forum that I check out that I'm having a problem with. Also, it's not all the time. Sometimes everything works perfectly. Other times...not so much.

I run Nortons all the time. I've also just run Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch, as well as performed Verizon's PC tune-up and run Verizon's Anti Virus and Anti Spyware. No change.

Any idea what I'm dealing with? Is it the machine? The ISP? A virus I haven't caught up with?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does someone in the house use the DSL connection? Perhaps someone is using your wifi or a xbox 360 is hooked up to the line? Maybe your ISP(place your PC connects to the Internet highway) is super busy. It's hard to diagnosis this stuff unless someone remotely controls your PC to check it out for themselves.

You may want to try these.

-Restart your PC,reset the RAM

-Windows ME/XP

Try going to 'My Computer'
Right click on your hard drive
Click Properties
Disk Cleanup
Check everything that doesn't begin with 'system' and hit o.k.

Windows Vista

Click on the window icon on the bottom left of the taskbar
go to computer
follow the directions from above, starting at, Right click on your hard drive

& also

-Once your get to your hard drive properties click on the 'tools' tab next to the 'general' at the top of the section, follow the directions

both steps could take 1-2 hours+ if you've never done them on your PC before.

Good Luck and let me know if it helped at all,if anything you should just notice that your PC is a little more responsive in general not while surfing the net. I've also noticed that this website has been acting up lately,so it may just be the site, nothing on your end.

Inspect what is set to auto-start in your registry, click Start > Run type "regedit" (no quotes) Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Right-click and delete anything that looks out of place. WARNING, this can cause additional issues with your PC, however, a necessary step. Most problems stem from programs auto-starting background processes that are set to perform tasks like auto-updating and to periodically upload your banking data to their FTP servers :)

Next, turn off System restore, right-click "My Computer" on your desktop, select the "System Restore" tab. Check the box to disable. NOTE, read what you are disabling, only do so if you are really comfortable.

Reboot, enjoy the speed of your 2.5L to 3.4L upgrade :D

Looks like someone doesn't want you to surf car forums.....

Seriosly-try disabling Norton and see how it runs. I used it for about 2 weeks. I don't know how the new versions are but the old ones used to take over your PC. A lot of spyware takes into account that you may be running major brand anti virus software. Make sure your definitions are up to date. I use Avast myself on my PC's.

Fellas,

I'm not sure who had the right answer because I did all of the above. I am now back to my pre-meltdown download speed. Thanks!

(Also, Norton sucks.)

What browser are you using, Internet Explorer? If so, I would highly suggest switching to Firefox.

You can thank me later.
