Hi All -

Just wondering ... how did you get involved with Porsche? Do you remember the first time you saw one? Your first drive in one? Well ... I remember all of these and I thought I would share. Hope you enjoy the story.

It all started with a maroon 993. I was just a youngster (maybe 10?) on a weekend golfing trip with my father and little brother. As we were checking out of the hotel, there was this gorgeous car parked outside the lobby. I went "WOW! What is that dad!?" and his response was something to the effect of "I think it's a Porsche" (he is NOT a car guy AT ALL) ... however from that day forward I was bitten by the P-car 'bug'. I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life.

Fast forward 6 years. I was given an incredible opporunity to work in a steel factory in Germany. My boss, who had been best friends with my grandfather before he passed offered my the trip out. When I got there, he showed me his "collection" of about seven cars: Austin Healey, Pre-War MG, Jag E-type and a guards red on black 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet to name a few. He said, "Let's go for a ride ... which one?" Needless to say, we took the 911 and I fell in love the minute I heard the engine gurgling and brapping behind us. Just unreal. Pair that up with the Autobahn and a trip to Nurburgring, well, you get the idea. I was one happy camper. Eventually I was able to take a side trip to Stuttgart and the Porsche Museum. I got a story published through the PCA Upper Canada Region ..

So, upon my return to North America I decided to pick up a 944. I definitely had to be a part of the Porsche legend. They were just so much fun! I found a decent example not long after and quickly snatched it up. Not a bad car to beat around on and really get a feel for driving stick all the time. It was far from perfect but I sure loved it. Eventually it needed lots of repairs and just became too unreliable to drive every day, so it had to go.

Three years went by and I knew the 944 had to go. I was sad, but I thought about a few things. I did know I still wanted a Porsche for sure. It is just too much fun. I first looked at a 968 cabriolet, but the owner was asking waaay too much. Then my thoughts shifted to the Boxster. They are newer, safer and quite sensible if you find the right model with a strong repair history and not a lot of miles. I have been very lucky with it so far ... no unexpected repairs other than scheduled maintenance.

Well, I guess I am just a Porsche nut and love being involved with the club, etc. Just thought I would share my story. I would love to hear the stories of others as well!

Youngster!!
I've thought about a similar thread, but need to sit and write it in word and paste it in.
Just so you know how young you are, I bought my first Porsche - '64 356 C Cab in the summer of '67.
3-911's, 2-914/6's, 5-914/4's, 1-924 Turbo, 1-944, and now the 06 Boxster.
3-Formula Fords, 2-Formula Atlantics, 1-Sports 2000. (in between 944 and Boxster)

Scanned in pic is '86 RT4 Ralt-Cosworth Formula Atlantic

Wow, that is incredible. I hope I can have a list that reads like that later on in my life! :) ... I'm just getting started. I would love to hear your story though if you do find time!

It helps being a son of a car nut.
I was at USAC midget and sprint races long before I was old enough to remember them.
The list of cars is far more impressive than my list of retirement assets..........
Oh well, dad died young after sacrificing fun for retirement. I live every day, even if I have to work till the day I drop.

I have been a car nut since I could talk, I remember seeing a 911 at age 6-7, It was probably an early car as this was the early 70's, I was in love. I lusted after a Porsche my whole life. I had many, many cars before but when I was 28 I bought my first, An 86 944 and 6 months later I had my first 911, an 86 Carrera that I still own. Since than I have just about always had 2 Porsche's.
I had a brief flirtation with an Audi S4 but sold that after a short time for my Boxster S, had to sell the 986S because I needed some more room for my daughter so I replaced that with a 996.
One of the P-cars I miss the most is my 88 851!

How did I get involved with Porsche?

I was a out of work mechanic.. a private porsche repair place needed help.. they liked my overly obsesive compulsive quirks and my rediculous attention to detail building engines.. so there I was.. building air cooled porsche engines..
