Interesting that the Cayman will get 10 more HP than the Boxster, even though the engines are the same size. Porsche is playing with market diversity again.
I wonder if these are still considered 987s or if they've gone to 988 (or something). This is certainly a more dramatic change than the 986 -> 987.

I was wondering the same thing. The only time that I can think of that the weight on a Porsche model line dropped was from 993 to 996. Other than that, I think they've always gotten heavier, so I bet it's safe to say that it's gained a little.

There would be a weight increase with the PDK option...it's definitely heavier than the Tiptronic system. Not sure if there would be a significant weight increase with a manual transmission.

I still like the topless option in the boxster and at 310 HP for the S, that's plenty for me. Although the Cayman with the hard top is the better daily driving option, in my opinion. Either way , both would provide some serious fun when driving.
I love the top down driving of the boxster but the looks of the Cayman are just SO nice. Tough decision....
Considering I would go from 240 to 310 in hp I think I would get the boxster...I wold ony get a cayman to not have 2 of the same car....but man oh man...320? Give it to the Box too :D

My 3.2 has 280. Over 300 sounds great, but at only basically ten percent more HP and probably some added weight, it would, more than likely, not show in the seat of the pants. A PDK Would probably make more of a difference, but again, that added weight hits you everywhere; cornering, braking, bounces on rougher pavement, etc., etc., etc. I'll take the lighter car, every time.
I was suprised Porsche went with a displacement bump (to 2.9L) for the base motor and NOT add Direct Injection. Still.. 260hp+ in the base is nice :) I guess they will wait a couple of years, add DI and give you 300hp in the "base" model.

You would never find me driving a clutchless sports car. No matter what the technology behind it, if it can shift itself, it's an automatic and it takes away from the fun of driving. I've had some seat time in the Maserati coupe with the F1 transmission, the car has 400 horsepower, but driving with the flappy paddles took alot away from the fun of the car.

Any mention on prices? I assume they are going up but not sure how much.
Price increase should be about the same as the 997s - 2.5-3%, at least from what dealers are saying. But more importantly, I wonder what the dealer profit margin will be for 2009...a lower margin will mean smaller discounts.

It doesn't say the base cars don't have DI. It says they will actually get an economy gain which says to me that they are getting it.

No it says they stick with "port injcection" meaning no DI at least anytime soon.

From the article:
Base Boxster and Cayman stick with port injection, but do have a capacity increase, from 2.7 to 2.9 liters. Power is up from 245 to 265 horsepower (Cayman) and 255 (Boxster)
If you look at the 997 as a point, the change to Direct Injection gave them 20hp -3.6 from 325 to 345 and 3.8 from 355 to 385. I would extraopolate that a 2.7 witha DI should put out about 265 hp (given the base is 245 currently). A 2.9 with DI should have 300hp.
Perhaps there is a greater cost to get DI to work on the smaller motors than to simple increase their size. I'm not sure how much in common the 2.7 had in common with the larger 3.4-3.8l motors.

320hp is 911 territory not too long ago. A well deserved jump on performance. Whether or not is Cayman or Boxster the 10hp delta is not a big deal. Mine is 2003S I can only imagine 310 hp, an additional 45hp is going in the right direction. I still would pick the Boxster for the convertible aspect of the ride at night and on cool days. The Cayman does not even come with sunroof.
