View Full Version : Hobbies?

We're all obviously passionate about our Boxsters and fiddling with them, but I wondered what other hobbies you all might enjoy?

Mine is marine aquariums. I have two. A small 20 gallon tank at home with an anemone and clowns in it, and a 150 gallon tank at the office with a bunch of fish and corals from around the world. It's nearly as expensive as owning an old Boxster, but I love it.

Here's a link to a movie of my 150 I shot recently and the specs on the tank:

What's your OTHER hobby?

I love playing poker. I started playing $5 draw poker once a week about 3-4 yrs ago right before the big Hold'em thing hit. Things have picked up quite a bit now. Now I play No Limit Hold'em about 3-4 nights a week at my buddies' houses. Usually $20 buy-in mini tournaments or $100 dollar max buy-in cash games. In fact I'm having a game tonight. I started out at my house with just a few of my friends and now I have a $20 buy-in tourney with over 15 people showing up every tues night. It's getting out of hand! My living room is turning into a mini poker room lol. I love it though. It's a great hobbie and good times with friends. Sometimes I win a few hundred bucks once in ahwile which is always nice too.

Remember him?

Gross! I did NOT eat Wang Chung, the lousy rock group.

...that has some very not-good connotations to it, and I'm not referring to the cannibal kind either!

- I go 4X4 off-roading with a couple of Las Vegas clubs (with my car's current capabilities I can go up to level 2.5 trails)
- I am still trying to learn sailing in the San Diego Bay. I have a sail boat at the Chula Vista Marina.

Randall - Im also big time into Reef Aquaria... I have a 125G, 40G, and 20G zoo tank. Here is a link to a pic of my smallest tank: http://www.cincyreef.com/phpBB2/album_pic.php?pic_id=281

I also enjoy Golfing, and Drinking; usually at the same time. My other vice is my Truck. I enjoy tinkering with it and off roading. which generally leads to time spent fixing it.

Jeff, very cool zoas in that tank. I've got a bunch of them as well... but I'm battling bubble algae (the big shooter marble sized and the small pea sized colonies as well). It's a great hobby though.

One thing about owning an old Boxster as a third car and having a 150 gallon marine tank is the competition for one's cash... both require lots of it on a consistent basis :D

Dang... hey, I heard from an unnamed source that you'd be fragging those SPS's and fedexing them to me this week, as a free gift from one boxster owner to another. :D

Fine looking tank you got there. PM me with your setup. I'd love to know about it.

PS- you Porsche owners that don't understand what "fragging SPSs" means should not get all freaked out... it's marine aquarium talk and competely legal and not immoral in any way

Maybe I can fire up the "guitar" thread to compete with the "aquarium" thread!

I've been a guitarist from age 17 to 33 (today) and started as a typical Van Halen wannabe. About 8 years ago I discovered flamenco and I have not turned back since. (Bruce Lee - nuevo flamenco? cool stuff... how about flamenco puro?) (Buffalo - what kind of music do you play?)

Unfortunately, the time I spend playing guitar is dwindling less and less as the girlfriend (and the career I guess) grow more interesting!

Other hobbies are autocross, sailing, new home upkeep, etc....

Boating, R/C airplanes, cars.

I'm building a shop right now so I can start restoring a 1970 Torino GT I have. I plan to install a lift, and that will come in handy on the Boxster too! I like wrenching on things... :) Looking forward to learning to weld and doing light bodywork.

I terrorize fish - I Kitesurf. You can 'sneak' up on them at about 20mph with a silent kite in the sky.

I was simply tired of spending half a day sitting in the lineup with a bunch of wave-horney surfers getting a few crappy waves available in my local section of the Atlantic, so I now have playtime that will ring you out like a dishrag in a couple of hours but leave you with a Boxster-like grin afterwards.

My hobbies include minor audiophilia, amateur racing, travel, and wine snobbery.

In the "minor audiophilia" category, my living room is set up primarily for listening to two-channel music. Nothing better than sitting there, closing my eyes and enjoying music. I used to play classical guitar, but that wasn't as...ahem...enjoyable for anyone. :p

Under "amateur racing", we have the fact that I crew for amateur race cars that hang out at Buttonwillow and WSIR, along with a couple of cars that race down in the Baja series of street races that take place in Ensenada, Mexicali, Tijuana and Tecate. As far as driving goes, I used to take my Eclipse out for hot-lapping events out at Buttonwillow and WSIR a lot, but lately have not had the time. :(

"Travel" takes me to Asia. I have friends and family in South Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan. I try to visit at least two out of those four a year. Other than that, I've been around the US quite a bit lately, and just finally made it out to England a couple months back. I still need to really tour Europe though.

And lastly, "wine snobbery". I like pretending I know what I'm talking about, and that's about it. I have a small wine fridge with some great bottles, but I'm far too lazy to really memorize which year was good for which wine, so I generally just have to trust my tongue and hope that I'm not a complete dilettant. :) I like to get out to Napa quite often, but it's been a while...

In this order
1/Playing with my first and only granddaughter Layla, taking pictures of her, being dodo and making goo goo eyes looking at her. I think there is a common tread here!!!
2/I love watching F-1 racing and ALMS. My father got me hooked by taking me to the Grand Prix of Cuba in 1957 as a kid. Never forgot the excitement and noise of the cars then. Seeing Fangio, Stirling Moss, Marques de Portago and so on got me hooked. My son bought tickets for me on my b-day for the GP of Montreal. We are spending 4 days together. Driving up in the Boxster from Long Island.
3/Skiing with the family- New Years at Tremblantt Resort in Quebec Canada.
4/Skin diving in the Carribbean. :D

I restore old cars (currently building a pro-touring 76 Corvette, with a 81 Jeep CJ7 and a 67 Mustang waiting for their turn in the garage and my wallet)
Motorcross/Enduro riding - I too seem to get worse as I get older
Observed Trials - my brother is just now getting me interested in this
Sport bikes
Vintage Audio equipment (I have a soft spot for 60's and 70's vintage Marantz)
Home theatre - I went a bit overboard on this too...but it sure makes movie watching cool
Computers - this has gotten out of hand too
I used to snow ski on a regular basis, but haven't been in a few years
I loved the 150 gal. aquarium I had, but the wife would always freak when a fish would die, so I sold it.
What's next??? Autocross?

Wow - Thumper, I didn't expect anyone else to come up with observed trials. I just got into it two seasons ago - what a great sport! Eslai - so... what equipment are you listening to now? I am a two channel guy as well; currently using Martin Logan Prodigy's powered by a McIntosh 602 (& C2200).

Oh, and I like my wife too. I think I will keep her around for a while. By the way, she asked THE QUESTION and I'm not talking about the one that involves her bringing her hot friend over for baby oil twister. She wants to learn how to drive the Boxster! Can you believe the nerve of that woman? Anyway, any of you have or had the same problem? Moral support and or advice is more than welcome? She has never driven a manual!

it seem that keeping the wife away from our car is a hobby on its own, mine drove it once, i took her to the track then, spun once and she is so afraid now that there is no way she wants to drive it....Cool!! ;)
as for hobby, skiing is a must, looking to get to canada next year, any suggestion from our canadian drivers?

I taught my wife to drive a manual in my Acura 3 days before we bought the Box. She did good too. We picked up the car in California and drove it back to Jersey - she piloted 1,500 of the 4,000 miles (we didn't pick out a very direct route). I for one am proud that she wants to drive it. I think it just means that she has good taste. I prefer to drive when I am in the car, but I encourage her to drive it when she is going places. I look at it this way - she let me get the thing, and the more she gets excited about this stuff, the more likely it is that she will let me trade it in on a new 911 C4S in a few years! ;)
