Just watching and enjoying Bullitt. Is this the best car chase scene ever filmed? Another candidate - Ronin. What do you think?

Bourne identity had a pretty good one.

One classic is in The French Connection, but it is more accurately a "train chase"... car chasing train. All the more amazing, because they had no cgi animation at the time - real cars and real drivers captured on film.

The Itallian Job, Minis and Michael Caine, funny and some really awesome stunt driving.
Both of the 'Gone in 60 Seconds" the original was real, no computers and all done by the real actors.
The later version had some nice looking vehicles., among other icandy. CCLinLOO

There was movie called "Vanishing Point (1971) " that had some good chases in it, and the whole movie was about a driver delivering a car to California. I thought it was pretty cool. Lots of really high speed driving.

The actor in it was Barry Newman and he drove a Barracuda I think.

You are right about the French Connection. Great car chase and not staged! I even saw a documentary about the movie that said that they didn't even bother to tell the NYPD that they were going to do the chase, just ran it and filmed it. That would never happen today.

Days of Thunder when the two racers get the rentals(more of a race than chase really) and drive the crap out of them and also when he(tom cruise) messes around with that cabbie. lol Not the best stuff thats for sure, but I figured hey why not?

I'm 35 years old and I remember a disturbing movie called

"THE CAR"

It was in the late 70's about a possessed black custom Lincoln that preyed on unsuspecting victims.

I have to agree, The Blues Brothers was the most hilarious car chase, wreck, stunts of all time.

bourne supremacy good?

I seem to recall a smashed up Russian econobox out accelrating a new BMW. I couldn't get past the unrealistic performance and vehicle dynamics of this chase scene.

Please tell me I'm remembering the wrong movie!

HAHA yeah true. I just watched that movie and thought the exact same thing! I prefer the chase in the Bourne Identity when he was driving a Mini

All good choices. The remake of The Italian Job is good- the fantasy of Charlise Theron driving the hell out of a MINI could get you through the night.... but... I think that Bullitt is still the gold standard.

The opening scene in "The Transporter" is pretty fantastic. Also, I think the chase in Bourne Sup II was better than in the first one.

The best ever: Bullitt. When the French Connection came out, the chase scene was billed as better than Bullitt. I didn't agree. Steve McQueen did his own driving in Bullitt, which definately gives it bonus points. 2nd best (in my humble opinion) is Ronin.

Ronin- hands down. No annoying musical score, no dialogue, just de Niro and ice-cold concentration.

I'm thinking the opening chase in Mad Max
Closely followed by the middle chase in Mad Max
Which finished just behind the closing chase in Mad Max

As to the earlier post about a movie called The Car, I'm the same age and I remember that same movie! I've only seen it once but remember it to be quite a good horror flick. (If there is such a thing)

French Connection to me. Bullit was pretty good too!

And plenty of scenes from Miami Vice. DJ getting sparks at night was fun!

In the remake of the Italian Job DVD there are some "behind the scenes" of the stunt driving and training that the actors went through. Pretty cool, showing Charlize in the drivers seat, rehearsing the script, and then peeling off and doing a 180 with no cuts in the action.

I've gotta go see Ronin again.

What about Terminator 2? Oh, a motorcycle vs a big-rig I guess is not a car chase. But then later theres the scene with the liquid nitrogen truck...

I work with a company that publishes a number of computer publications in a little town called Brisbane, just south of San Francisco. It was on a road behind this office that the final scene of the "Bullit" chase was filmed, as the Charger came down the hill and smashed into a gas station that used to be there.

Also, my favorite car-related scene - not exactly a chase - had to be in a very old film called "If I Had a Million." In one part of the film, WC Fields and his lady had been run off the road by bad drivers so, once they got a million bucks, went out and bought car after car to plow into cars driven by what Fields loudly proclaimed to be "road hogs."

"Ronin" is my favorite chase, though. Incredible photography. Weren't a lot of car chase filmed in France orchestrated and performed by Remy Julienne (sp?) and his team?

"Bullitt" - THE CHASE
"The Road Warrior" - (The last of the V8's) Max's got NO2 and a supercharger!!
"The Transporter" - opening chase
"The Great Escape" - THE JUMP
"T2" - The terminator on a harley Fatboy versus a semi, including a stuntman jumping the 750 pound bike.
"American Graffiti" - John Milner races the yellow deuce coupe against Harrison Ford's Chevy
"The Blues Brothers" - Jake and Elwood know how to spec out their cars.

I don't remember which one, maybe the first Borne Identity movie with Matt Damon was pretty good.

Though not as good as Ronin or Bullitt, the Porsche and Ferrari chase in Against All Odds was fun.

I have to say:

The transporter
Ronin
James Bond (forget which movie) where he is driving the Aston Martin. Actually now that I think about it...he drives an old Aston which was sweet, but he also drives the DB9 if I remember correctly in a more recent movie.

I would give my left nut for a Aston Martin V12.

That is one of my favorite movies. I think the car was a 1970 Dodge Challenger though.

No one has mentioned Le Mans? That was great too. Very little dialogue, just Porsche vs. Ferrari and Steve McQueen being a badass for about 2 hours. Somebody on this board has a quote from that movie in their sig. I don't remember who though.

Another good one was "From Dust To Glory." Not technically a car chase, but a real good documentary on the Baja. Every time I watch it, I want to sell everything I have and go lose myself in the desert in a rail buggy.

I liked the EVO going down the stairs, then flipping itself back over in Who am I?
