I'm planning a holiday in Vegas and SFO end of year. Just wondering if it's worth driving from Vegas to SFO... it's about 800 miles from what I gathered through MapQuest.

I reckon it'll take about 2 days to cover that distance at a comfortable pace. Is there a decent accomodation along the way to stay the night? You know, a tourist attraction of sorts? I drove from LA to Vegas 10 years back and remembered there was a Calico mining town. But that distance was much shorter.

Or should I just can the idea and take a domestic flight?

And no, I'm not going to rent a Boxster for the roadtrip :)

Thanks in advance :)

Just so you know, Enterprise rents Boxsters!

I am planning the reverse trip, from San Jose (south of San Francisco) to Las Vegas in late July... you'll find places sporatically between the two. You may want to do some checking via the Internet though before you leave. If you type in the towns from Mapquest into hotels.com, it should bring up various lodging options.

And you should definitely change your mind and rent a Boxster so you can drive like a demon through the desert! I bet they're very, very expensive though, and I can guarantee they won't come with unlimited mileage!!

I just did that trip a little while back. There isn't a whole lot between those 2 places. No stand out attractions that i can think of. Sure there are some towns here and there - are you into lifted trucks bumpin' 50 cent? :)

I wouldn't do it again - it was just too far and too boring for me - i did it all at once with a couple of buds. It's gonna be hot in July,, LA to Vegas or San Diego to Vegas is a lot shorter and a more bearable (mostly cuz' it's shorter distance)

Yes, they will be! I was very tempted to rent a Viper or 360 when I was in Palo Alto Sheraton last year. At $2,500 per day with 150 miles, it's just ridiculous. Oh yes, I only considered the Viper because that is such an outrageous car which exists mostly only in US. Bus engine in a car body, loads of power with no refinements :) My apologies to Viper owners out there but this is the reality. It is nonetheless still an American icon!

From reading this, I'll probably take a domestic flight in between.

Thanks for the replies...

..

Don't get what you mean on this.... but thanks for letting me know it's mostly a boring journey.

Try "rent a vette" on Google. They rent exotics and the last time I checked, the Box was about $250 per day.

I'd say fly it, actually. I've done the reverse trip, from San Francisco to Las Vegas and it's boring boring boring boring *splat bugs!* boring boring boring boring boring....

Your only respite is to cross over from I-5 to 101 through some of the canyon roads. But is that enough to make up for the rest of the boring, straight drive? I don't think so. :(

Yeah, after hearing what you guys have experienced, I'm going to take a flight inbetween.

What about driving between Grand Canyon and Las Vegas then? Am considering that against joining a guided tour on a bus...
