Took the wife down to the BMW dealership today and encouraged her to drive a 2003 540i... steptronic transmission and a 4.4 liter V8.

That car could spank my Boxster all day at any speed. Dang!

Anyone here have one? I sure hope she decides to buy it.

It's gonna be hard to get to sleep tonight thinking I could have a Porsche and a BMW in my garage one day soon. That's always been my dream... drive a V8 BMW to work and drive a Porsche on weekends. Somebody scrape me off the ceiling. :D

Don't have a 540, but I have a 745i and it really hauls. My brother has an M5 and we went neck and neck down the freeway... well I guess his M5 was a tad in the lead but my 7 was hanging with it. BMW's are great cars and I'm blessed to actually have a Porsche and a BMW. Both great cars and I do hope that your wife picks it up. They look awesome especially at dusk where you only have the Angel Eyes on. She can't go wrong.

I have had a 540 and strangely, preferred the 530. It might be worth driving both, if you did not already do so.

I find the 540 to be a heavy feeling car, when compared to the 530. It is a fine car and this just is a personal preference issue. I find the 530 to handle and drive like a much lighter car.

Either way, I think they are both fine autos.

I second the 530.. ITs a sweet ride, and you can't go wrong with the inline 6 engine.. It handles better, and is considerably cheaper, and burns less gas

I have a 750IL and If you ever venture into the 7 series I would reccomend that, they are not too much more than a used 745IL or a used 540i. It has drive/sport mode to the suspension. a electronic damper control(EDC). It totally changes the characteristics of the car. Also the V12 blows the 986 away on a rolling start. I dragged raced a friend of mine in my 986 and man......
Also, the parking distance control (PDC) come in handy.

Oh yeah, did I mention most 750ILs come stock with BULLET PROOF/RESISTANT GLASS! That was the selling point for me more than the V12. Lets see you get that in a 540 :cheers:
