very sad to die that young. I always thought of him being Italian but his helmet always reminded me that he was in fact swiss. The guy had quiet a life and ironically he died in a car crash after being paralyzed for a long time in race accident at Long Beach.
IMHO this was when we had real racing drivers, the early to mid 70's were insane 9 or 10 guys dropping dead in a single season, some burned alive like Roger Williamson and the cars kept going by the fire and resumed the race. Back then there were actually three pedals, no rev limiter and the driver had to actually take one hand off the steering wheel to shift! Nowadays we have all these pampered boy band 80 pound drivers. and drives are no longer based on merit, instead nationality and sponsor connections seem more important. And races haven't been this dull in over a decade.
I know after his paralysis Clay started a driving school for the handicaped and never seemed bitter that his career ended on a sour note. Good guy. RIP
