So I broke down and bought a four post bed from that crappy store pier1 (big xmas sale $1000 bed bought for $480) after the misus said four post beds were "hot". This rare luxury on myself (i'm a designer minimalist when it comes to decor) inspired me to go one better.
I picked up one of those NASA engineered memory foam pads,
its like 5 pounds and 3 inches thick. Apparently people rave about them so
I'm giving it a shot for my horrible back (1st vert. is fused to tail bone).

anyone have one these? The idea of sticking my face in foam seem weirdo to me.

They dont weigh 5 pounds. My GF's dad has one, they are heavy. They are also hard at first. You see those commercials of them jumping up and down? Its extremely hard to do. You sink into the foam after a couple of minutes, you dont just lie down. He has the accual temper pedic, which I assume your reffering to.

I canceling my order right now.

Bogg is correct on that, I think mine was easly over 100lbs. It was nice for awhile but it just seem to hold your body heat in too much and we ended up getting rid of it.

I remember my best mattres was filled with water and had mirrors on the canopy while the incence burns and the bong........... :o

sounds like you had the full on foam mattress. This pad tgoes over the mattress (which I paid big bucks for!). I don't think I would be crazy about the idea of of having the whole darn thing made of foam. Makes me think of the race seat in an open wheeler.

I haven't noticed the hardness or heat retention with mine, and would give it high marks. I'm a bigger fan of the "shaped" memory foam pillow, which eases the three pillows awkwardly stuffed behind the head phenomena.

I had a pillow made from memory foam given to me as a gift. I think I probably could have gone out and found a more comfortable rock to lay my head on.

there is a lot of funny stuff going on here....I had it as a gift, forced to accept, from my mom, I already had a double pillow top mattress and this big chunk of foam was just over kill, I gave it away to my sister because they had a crappy mattress, they love it.....

so maybe if you have a quality mattress its useless, and if you have a crap mattress its a quick cheaper fix....I personally found it irritating.....

Not sure about the pad, but I got the full Tempurpedic one some time ago for their 90 day trial. (where do the returns go after 90 days??? Back into the store?)

Anyway, they're cold and hard in the winter, they're too warm in the summer. And if you like to bounce around a little once in a while with the missus... they're really bad for that, as some motion transfer is good in that case, unless you want to break your back

Needless to say, I returned it way before 90 days :D

Wow, I have had quite the opposite experience. I bought a tempurpedic mattress about 5 years ago and think it, aside from the Box, is the best luxury item I have ever bought. I sleep like the dead on that thing...

it would be nice to get a 5 foot by 2 foot peice of that memory foam and have an upholstery shop integrate that into the seats of our boxsters.

A local Doc my wife works with returned his because when he turned on his side: the impression he made previously was slow to return to neutral.
Maybe like shifting a Boxster 1-to-2 when it's cold.

still waiting for this to arrive....zzzz
on the bright side I was able to pick up my bed with a rental van from Home Depot (saved $80 clams on delivery) and assembled this monstrosity all by my little self in about two hours. If I had an electric screw driver it would have take half that amount. Great holiday sale, Saved 50% good thing I didn't buy it last month!

for those of you still interested.

The thing arrived in small box, didn't notice it right away so the box got wet when it started to rain.
It was rolled up like crescent roll dough. I had to unroll it which was weird.
THe instructions said it needs a couple of hours to come up to room temp. before it fully expands in every direction.
It smells really bad. Like someone left a can of paint open in the bedroom. I had to open the windows. I stuck it under my mattress cover and the fitted sheet had no problem going over. As soon as I sat on it I could tell it was going to interesting.
I was out like a light in record time. Unusual for me, I'm a big toss and turner as well. Woke up and I had the feeling like when you have slept just the right amount. No back pain like in recent previous nights.

hopefully the smell goes away.

Glad to hear you enjoy your purchase. The tempurpedic mattress really helped my back and always gives me great rest.

Sorry to hear about the smell - do you suppose that is because it got wet? Will it be able to dry out if you have it under youyr sheets and stuff now?

no I heard complaints about the new smell before. Seems like it might take some time. I'll drop them an email about the smell maybe they can suggest something.
It was slightly damp not really wet to the touch or anything.
Maybe I'll just stick it in the closet for a few days so it can breathe in there.

Hey I Thought the memory foam was to remind the wife the last time we had sex oops sorry made love. :D :D

Kidding aside I bought the 3" topping foam and it's the best thing i did in the bedroom my wife said, now she falls asleep immediately and i lay there in bed staring at her without any back pain trying to remember why i bought the dang thing in the first place.

Hey Perfectlap the smell does go away after a week or 2. :)

I think mine is 3" Visco foam. I really didn't reserach this enought before I bought. Someone suggested overstock.com or ebay and i found the better price on ebay.
$100 delivered. It was compressed to baout one inch thick when I unrolled it.
two weeks for the smell eh? definitely going in the closet then.

hey perfect lap, yeah, it comes all compressed and you have to spread it out....and it will reek for a bit, not too much you can do that I am aware of....doubt it has anything to do with the rain....it should go away....tough it out

OK,

been about a week now.

Have to say this is the best $100 I have spent a very very very long time.
Smell is down to about 10% of what it was the first nite. They say to leave a bowl of vinegar by the bed side or hit it with lysol or febreeze. Haven't done either.

If you sleep on your back this is a 1000% improvement.
If you sleep on your side its at least a 100% improvement.
and if you sleep on your stomach face down....you are weird (like the missus).

SOmetimes I'll just watch TV in Bed and the minute I lay on this thing its like lying in a cloud. Feels almost like a back massage, which I guess is the memory foam pusing back on you. I've yet to wake up feeling tired since I purchased this thing.
The only problem now is on days I have nothing to do I stay in bed too long!!
p.s.
A special shout out to CoolMax pillows which I picked up at the local Target for about $10. They don't get warm and stay puffy.
