I look at it as a European Civic. It's cheap, small, can be tuned(not riced),good on gas and from reviews they are supposedly reliable(doubt Civic reliable though).
Had a friend that drove one. Said it handled great. Mentioned that it hugged the turns surprisingly well too.
BUT
Take this as you will.... It was a girl friend of his' car. And my wife wants one too.

Great little fun car. Handles really well, and the new model runseven better with a Turbo replacing the SC.
my wife wants one really bad too!!! not sure on them myself...I guess if she ever gets it...I'll give it a spin, but she needs to pay off her murano first

Corona is a little iffy, its the only one id let slide. As long as you dont start making beer-a-coladas its ok.

The MINI Cooper S is a blast to drive. The ride is harder then a boxster, of course, but its well balanced and hugs the road very well. Its like driving a go-kart. If you want to test drive, go some place with twists and turns and room to push the car. Like the boxster, its not a car where comfort is of the utmost importance; but rather, how it drives in terms of how much fun.
Amazingly fun car. Reliability may be an issue though...
My boss ended up having to lemon law his after a ton of pains with electrical issues. The guy handling the case said he'd handled quite a few on the mini.
I guess you can take the brand out of Britain, but you can't take the British wiring out of the car.
im sure were all bigger than the boxsters. when i get out of that thing i feel like a giant :)
I drove an S convertible. *Tons* of fun to drive.. zips around like a go-kart. The drop top was a pain in the ass, though. You can't see a damned thing out the back of the car. That little guy (the hardtop version) was gonna be my car before I test drove a Boxster.. then it was all over. (and I'm $450/month poorer)
I test drove one last summer for about an hour. Spent about 10 minutes going through highway cloverleafs. Absolute blast. Neutral handling. Able to get the rear to step out and stay neutral. Neat supercharger whine (which may "get old" after a few thousand miles). Certainly could notice the supercharger under all conditions.
Pros:
Spectacular handling, great viability. Lots of fun.
Cons:
Short wheelbase and runflats make highway expansion joints annoying (over time)
Smallish rear seat/legroom.
Bought one for the wife last June. It is a fun car. I won't say it is "little" because we consider it to have more space than the Boxster. I do have three problems with it:
1. For some reason, the door always seems to shut on my leg. Not sure why. I usually have to crank the door so it doesn't swing back on me.
2. If you are first in line at a stop light, you kinda have to crank you head to watch for the light change. You sit up high in the car, but there are some odd angles.
3. Stupid two-push keychain to unlock both doors.
Overall, these are relatively minor complaints. It is a fun car and gets better mileage than the Boxster. I didn't think that the all-seasons handled well in the snow. When I went to get snow tires (and rims) the place I go to had the John Cooper Works wheels so I got larger snow tires (not typical). Car looks great and handles better in the snow, but I think I'd keep the rims and put summer tires on them and keep the smaller rims and get snow tires.

*L* If it is a "girly car"...what does that say of mini salesman? Is that the woman's shoe salesman of cars? If you sell enough minis, do you get promoted and get to sell BMWs?
i kinda laugh when i see men driving mini's.
Actually, I kinda laugh too, also at men driving the VW new-Beetle convertibles.
Then I consider that I'm driving a white Porsche Boxster, or the even less masculine SLK and I laugh again.

Forget that girly car nonsense. It's the most fun car I've ever driven besides the Boxster. That's a list that includes several BMWs and just about every sport compact on the market since the late 90s.

excellent car, a fixture at autocross and track events ever since it was brought back by BMW. I Drove an S a few years back.. nothing but good things to report. The supercharger whine was very loud, I doubt I would consider the standard version if I were in the market for one. THe big cluster in the middle was all wrong and I think they changed it recently.
and the styling is unique, obviously.
As a fun sports car its an excellent choice, one of the best drivers I know picked one up. You should see this guy put down a fast lap in an BMW X5. That's some drivin'!
As a daily driver I'm not so sure I would be ok driving such a small car. Too many SUV on the highways. Mini CooperS vs. Tacoma = No contest.

We opted for the "autostick" and have fun with it. It is definately not the same as standard by you get to slap the stick forward and back. It loses the novelty though after hitting traffic and auto is welcome.

well in fact i was a bmw salesman and we were aloud to sell mini's also. i was not a dedicated mini salesman. i personally hated the mini, and never even sold one.
an interesting fact........the mini used to race porsches back in the day on the track, until the american muscle cars took over the track.
