Water pump, coolant replacement, new belt, new hoses, low temp thermostat. All preventative.

PCA NER AutoCross school today. Had a blast and learned a ton about Boxster handling. Its really non-intuitive that if you start losing the rear end you add throttle and if you start losing the front you reduce it. I'll have to practice that a lot before it becomes instinctive.

I added two switches to my gauge panel, one to control my cameras and the other one to switch on the front radiator fans to high using the instructions from Ben's thread. Hope to get it in the car and finish wiring it up this week.

Buttoned up the maintenance activity and got the car running - went for a test drive. All good! Quite a lot done on this "new to me" 40k mile 2001S with "some issues" that I purchased from a friend. Most of it was uneventful, except for separating the headers from the secondary cats and a single header bolt that broke off in the head and I had to put in a time-sert.

Got my "Classic" tag and mounted it up just in time for a test drive. No more registration fees or emissions inspections for this car!

Final buffed and then installed my home painted center console. So much better than the scratched up old rubber.

Replaced right rear trailing arm yesterday afternoon and took FUNTOY out for a spin to see if it had cured the rattle. Ran it over every bump I could find and it is completely gone from the right rear. A slight rattle from the left rear that I will take care of in a couple of days. This feels sooooooo good!

As proud of myself as when I first peed in the potty!

After breaking my wheel lock key, which itself was a replacement for a lost one ($80 to Porsche for the two!), as soon as I got the new key I replaced all the keyed lug bolts with regular bolts. Life is too short, I'm insured, and I have been told that the wheel locks don't really slow down a dedicated thief. First I cleaned off the old lug bolts with a wire brush, replaced the ones that were aging (peeling and corrosion on the shoulders) after first giving them a blast of primer, gloss black and clear coat. Yes I know that the black will chip off the bolts with every tightening, but for now they look better.

The wheel lock key broke when I went to loosen a tire that had been over-tightened by a shop that was repairing a slow leak. Now finally having been pointed to the section in my manual that specifies anti-seize on the threads and between the bolt head and the spherical cap (page 206 in my 2003 986S manual) I hope to never have this problem again. That was definitely a hubris moment -- read the manual on how to change a tire? I've been doing that for 40 years!

FYI = The other place where I use anti-seize is on the mating surfaces between the wheel and hub. Last year I was taking my tires off for a brake job and the wheels would not come off. Finally a friend suggested loosening the lugs just a bit and driving the car in a circle. Now those mating surfaces always get a thin coating of anti-seize after first going over those surfaces with a wire brush.

Went for the season's inaugural drive last night.
Out for 2 1/2 hours and did a little exploring.
Am I going to Boxster purgatory for driving on a gravel road?

Flushed the brakes and clutch in advance of a DE on the 26th. The clutch bleed valve is a royal pain in the butt. Is it worse on the 6 speed?

On the front right caliper the outer bleed valve was badly rusted and sheared off when I tried to loosen it. I am desperate to have that fixed before the DE. If anyone has a right front caliper for a 2004 S, please let me know.

I had my first Boxster flat tire. A quick change to the spare was easy - got rid of the security lugs a long time ago. Not sure of how the tire failed, most likely road debris. It was pretty torn up by the time I pulled off the highway. I'm just glad the wheel isn't damaged.

I've had this. The solution is to take the caliper off, put a washer over the bleed valve to protect the caliper then put a nut over and fill the centre with weld, welding the nut to the stump of the broken nipper. The heat and the ability to unscrew it now will work. If the thread isn't damaged just replace with a new bleed nipple. If it is, here in the UK on Ebay you can get a thread tap and larger bleed valve in a kit.
It's what I've done although had to take it to a garage workshop to do as I don't have a welder.
