Clutch Replacement Cost

Good Morning Folks,

I have a 2004 Boxster 986 in GREAT shape with 150,000 miles BUT the clutch has started to slip and I think it is major rather than the hydraulic cylinders.

So I asked a local import mechanic and he shocked me with saying it would cost around $8 K for clutch and IMS bearing replacement .

Was he just throwing a number out there or is that what I am facing ?

Not sure if I want to put that much $ into it.

Any recent experience from any of you ?

Thank you so much for your time !!

That quote is way over the top. I called a few reputable shops a few years ago here in the SF Bay Area. The consensus was about $4500-$4700 for clutch, IMS, and RMS. That is with one of the lower priced LN bearings, not the “solution.” Which would be another $1k.

I plan to did it all myself in a few years. And probably the chain guides at the same time. Check out “fun aheadTV” on YouTube for lots of Boxster engine refreshes. Goes over all the important stuff.

The official "Porsche-labor time" for the clutch is ~7 hours. I saw a video online where the showed the work and the tools needed, so if you have a lift and the tools you can tackle it on your own. The main and time consuming part is removing the transmission.

Found it: https://youtu.be/lJAPUCj_geg

Thank you - Update

Guys,

Thank you for the time you took to reply .I could not see myself parting with this car as the body is excellent shape so further checking around and as you guys said I was able to find a Indy European shop that has quoted clutch and Flywheel job at $3300 before tax.

So I am going to get that time and enjoy driving her for more miles. While she is at 150K I am sure she has some more life in her

You should consider also having the RMS, AOS, engine mount and transmission mounts replaced at the same time as it isn't that much more labor. Also Boxsters are known for having the clutch fork crack over time - so I would have that replaced too. You already know about the IMS so I won't go there.
